Metabolic Testing

Why is it important to know my metabolism?

Metabolism is influenced by a number of factors, such as:

• Age
• Gender
• Body Weight
• Muscle mass
• Hormone levels
• Illness or disease
• Medications

Two individuals with the same weight, same height, same age and same gender can have metabolic rates that are significantly different - as much as 900 calories per day! This may explain why weight loss varies among friends and family members participating in the same weight loss program.

Total metabolism = RMR + lifestyle/occupational activities + exercise.

The two factors that have the largest influence on your RMR (resting metabolic rate) are total body weight and total muscle weight. If you weigh more, your body requires more calories to maintain your normal body functions. If you have more muscle, your body burns more calories at rest. Your body combines food (carbs, fats and proteins) with oxygen to produce energy. The metabolic test that Optimum Fitness offers will measure the amount of oxygen your body uses and determine your metabolism in calories/day. The test will measure your oxygen consumption until it detects a consistent value. That is your RMR. Measuring metabolism is the most accurate method for determining your own bodies' unique needs and knowing your metabolism will allow you to determine a nutritional and exercise program that's just right for you.

What will I learn from this test?
You'll know exactly how many calories you should consume per day to stay at your current weight, how many calories you will need to burn to lose weight, exactly how many extra calories you get when you exercise and will allow you to know how you should be consuming those calories in terms of macro-nutrients such as carbs, fats proteins, etc. You will get a print out of your results with a basic diet and goal plan. The test itself is painless, all you have to do to find out is breathe.
